The Panel Haus Journal

Notes from building Panel Haus: what AI comics actually cost, how to keep a character consistent, and what a brand activation really produces.

Do you need Midjourney to make a comic?
No. Image generators are built to make one striking image, and a comic needs twenty consistent ones. Those are different problems, and the second one is the hard one.

How do you get a comic you made online actually printed?
Export a print-ready PDF and order it through the app. Three sizes are printable, and whether your book is stapled or spine-bound is decided by one thing: the page count.

How do you keep an AI character looking the same in every panel?
You stop describing them and start referencing them. Define a character once as a reusable blueprint, then cast it into every panel, so the description cannot drift between generations.

How do you make a comic if you can't draw?
You write it and let the panels be generated. The skill a comic actually needs is not drawing, it is deciding what happens in each panel, and that part was never the drawing.

Panel Haus vs Canva for making comics
Canva is a general design tool that can produce a comic-shaped image. Panel Haus is built for sequential art. The difference shows up on page two, when the same character has to appear again.

Can you run AI image generation on your own GPU?
Yes. Run ComfyUI locally, bridge it to Panel Haus with a free Cloudflare tunnel, and generate on your own hardware instead of ours. You need an NVIDIA card with at least 6GB of VRAM.

Why the meme is the door and the studio is the house
You cannot lead with "AI comic studio" before anyone is paying attention. So we start at the opposite end, with the lowest-commitment thing a person can make, and build the ladder behind it.

The nine-layer canvas, and how a browser comic editor exports pixel-clean
An editor has to draw things the export must never contain. Panel Haus solves it with nine strictly ordered layers and a second canvas that the user never sees.

How much does it cost to make a comic with AI?
A full comic costs roughly 25 to 38 ink on Panel Haus, which works out at about $2 to $3.50 a comic at pack prices. Here is where that number comes from.
